Charleston Wedding Puppets

What is a mojiganga?

A mojiganga (mo-he-gang-ga) is a giant puppet used as entertainment, sculpture, or a grand-scale design element for a large event. These captivating, oversized figures are made of strong paper-mâché called “cartonería” and fabric over a wire frame. Mojigangas were introduced into colonial Mexico by the Spanish in the 1600s and were historically used during religious pilgrimages.

Today the larger-than-life figures can be seen as any creation in cultural parades and festivals, such as Día de Muertos, and as brides and grooms in wedding processionals.
